As many as 8,700 tons of microplastics are being used in cosmetic products across Europe today. That's a lot of plastic that could end up in our waterways! A company like Teysha Technologies may just have a viable solution with the novel material that they developed. The material, called AggiePol, is made from natural feedstocks that biodegrades into harmless sugars. If this compound is adopted by cosmetic companies, it could replace the microplastics currently used as binders in products like eyelash glue and shampoo. Learn more about this company's invention here: https://lnkd.in/eb8g_MB8.

A quick survey of the beauty section of any store shows how entrenched plastic is in cosmetic production. Using alternative materials in beauty packaging may seem like the best way to combat pollution from plastic, but what if there were also ways to make plastic packaging itself more sustainable? As forthcoming regulations across the globe will impose stricter requirements on the acceptable amount of virgin plastic used in packaging, beauty companies are coming up with numerous innovative approaches to incorporate more recycled plastics in the production of cosmetics. Find out more about some of the creative approaches being taken here: https://lnkd.in/eejiPNPX.

Global production of plastic has doubled in the last 20 years, with about 36% being used in plastic packaging. Half of that amount is leveraged for single use-packaging, such as the food and beverage containers used in the takeout industry. With this kind of growing impact to the planet, it's great to see alternatives being implemented to revolutionize the way consumers can shop. Take refill shops, for example. There are hundreds of stores in the U.S. alone that offer bulk refill shopping for household staples and personal care items. This type of store allows shoppers to bring their own containers to stock up on goods like dish soap, shampoo, and pantry items in bulk without any of the standard plastic packaging that often comes with these products. Curious about how this kind of shopping would work? Check out this article from the perspective of a consumer: https://lnkd.in/eqe8tgX9.

Can sustainable beauty products be developed from plant and animal byproducts through nanotechnology? Nanotechnology may make cosmetic products more efficacious by leveraging nanocapsules to control release of components like hyaluronic acid and protect sensitive ingredients such as vitamin C from degrading over time. Nanoparticles could also be used in multifunctional products to deliver multiple results, such as sun protection or hydration, simultaneously. This technology could be an innovative tool for cosmetic manufacturers to provide more multipurpose and minimal products that align with the growing trend toward simplistic — and green — beauty routines. Did you know? Banana farming creates 80 million tons of waste every year — in just Pakistan alone. When you consider that on a global scale, that's a massive amount of agricultural waste generated from just one type of fruit. Fortunately, there are innovative people out there with a solution that could not only divert this organic matter from the waste stream, but actually harness it for sustainable energy and textile products. Scientists from Northumbria University partnered with academics in Pakistan and the UK to create a technology that takes the waste from bananas and turn it into textile fabrics. Any remaining matter is then turned into renewable energy. This amazing technology will not only contribute to a more sustainable future, but will also help deliver clean electricity to half of rural Pakistan.
