After 10 weeks and dozens upon dozens of sketches and prints later, I am finally wrapping up my internship with Molg! It has been an incredible experience to work with them and help contribute to their goal of demanufacturing. During my time there, I was tasked with developing and fabricating a product that was designed with demanufacturability in mind; more specifically, I utilized their library of CAD assembly patterns to create sustainable connections between the different components in a product. The big goal was to create something easy to assemble and disassemble with materials that are sustainable or reusable. With that in mind, I set out to create a rechargeable lamp with simple yet effective patterns to connect the components. The final prototype consisted of only 6 unique parts that came apart with ease. It was a long and slightly stressful project, but I learned a lot about many things about design, manufacturing and even a little bit about circuitry. A massive thanks to the mechanical team there that helped me through fabrication, to Filipe for teaching me how to solder for the first time, and of course to Mark and Rob for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow here. I will be sure to keep the lessons I've learned there and carry them with me as I get ready to go back to Tech!

"In a micro-factory the size of a garden shed, big minds are tackling a tiny problem: How to use the software that built a laptop to carefully dismantle it, robotically harvesting and sorting its components for reuse and recycling. A few years ago, most of these aging consumer workhorses might have ended up on a scrap heap. But innovators at Molg, with help from Autodesk technology, are efficiently transforming the raw materials of end-of-life products into a more sustainable future. For Autodesk and its customers, this little laptop is a major sign that we’re moving in the right direction."
