If you are greeting booth visitors with “Can I scan your badge?” … Congratulations! You have just turned your booth into a toll booth. Leads don’t want to feel like they’re paying a price for a conversation. We have compiled a list of phrases that can turn out to be a deal breaker instead of being an icebreaker. (grab your coffee. This is going to be a long one!) . . . 1. "𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬." This is the sales equivalent of a “Seen” on WhatsApp. ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: Leads are there to get answers, not assignments. The right move? Ask questions instead—engage, don’t disengage. 2. "𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟." Ah yes, the phrase that screams, “I’m just here for the free snacks.” ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: If it really sold itself, there wouldn’t be a booth, a sales team, or an event. Leads need to hear the how and why it solves their problem. 3. "𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲." Translation: We Googled ourselves, and no one disagreed. ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: Leads don’t care if you are the “best.” They care if you solve their problem. 4. "𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐝𝐠𝐞?" Nothing says “transactional” like skipping straight to badge scans without building rapport. ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: Leads don’t want to feel like another data point. Start with curiosity, not the QR code. 5. "𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞." Perfect for everyone? That’s a bold claim. Even coffee can’t claim that. ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: Leads want personalization. This phrase tells them nothing about how the solution addresses their unique challenges. 6. "𝐖𝐞’𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬." This is just a fancy way of saying "This conversation is now a ghost town." ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: It creates uncertainty. Leads need timelines and clear next steps, not a sales version of “maybe.” 7. "𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭?" This is like asking someone on a first date, "So, how much do you earn?" ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: Leads don’t want to feel like ATM machines. Start by understanding their challenges, not their wallet size. 8. "𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨." Translation: I’m about to bore you into regretting stopping by our booth. ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: Demos shouldn’t feel like speed dating—make them interactive and tailored. 9. "𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭." This is the sales version of “Let’s grab coffee sometime”—sounds nice but means absolutely nothing. ➦ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥: Leads don’t want to be left in limbo. They need actionable next steps, not vague promises. Lock in a follow-up right there—because if it’s not on the calendar, it’s not happening.
