This past October 3-5, 2024, close to 100 of our community members were privileged to join Visión y Compromiso's 22nd Annual Conference, "Promotoras Paving the Way and Leaving a Legacy of Transformation." Our Best Start Region 1 (BSR1) community members came from East LA, Metro LA, South El Monte/El Monte and SELA, and joined nearly 1,000 promoters and community leaders from California and 22 other states who are committed to representing the needs and interests of promotoras, who commit to their communities every day, collaborating with community-based organizations, supporting community-led efforts for self-determination, and promoting the overall health and wellness of our communities. Over the course of the three days, we were able to participate in a variety of capacity-strengthening workshops, expand our networks, catch up with old friends and colleagues, celebrate wins, build community, and share in joy to fuel our future efforts to transform our communities. This included, reconnecting with Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, who visited our booth and chatted with our Community Transformation Promoters. Additionally, our residents were able to share updates on their collective efforts and promote the Community Transformation Newsletter! Thank you, Visión y Compromiso and promoters across the world, for coming together and committing to advancing efforts that allow our communities to thrive. We look forward to next year's conference!

July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month. We know that people of color often face a disproportionate impact from mental health conditions due to the stigma surrounding mental health in BIPOC communities and limited access to mental health resources. WJC primarily serves students of color who come from under resourced communities where they have experienced injustice and violence. Our programs create opportunities for them to find alternatives to conflict through Peer Mediation and Healing Circles. We have found that Healing Circles have helped students foster a sense of belonging and joy, which can significantly impact mental health. Peer Mediation allows students to feel empowered in a supportive environment, while enhancing their communication skills and boosting self-esteem. When young people feel connected and accepted within their communities, they are more likely to experience lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
