In 2021, the North American Land Trust acquired Brinton Run Preserve, a 71-acre haven in Delaware County, PA, safeguarded forever by a Conservation Easement. Since then, through a partnership with the Monarch Joint Venture and The Bee and Butterfly Habitat Fund, NALT has transformed 24 acres of cool-season grasses into flourishing pollinator habitats. This ongoing project showcases the power of collaboration, patience, and long-term stewardship in creating vibrant ecosystems. A Productive Week for Team MJV in Indiana! We hosted a workshop at Morgan-Monroe State Forest, where my colleague, Mercy Manzanares, led an outstanding session. Partners from across the state, including DOD, NRCS, USFWS, Indiana DNR, City Parks, and the Southern Indiana Sentinel Landscape team, participated. Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit Mississinewa Lake with DNR staff. We met with representatives from Duke Energy to discuss an exciting pollinator habitat project in progress. The first-year seeding looks fantastic! Happy #MonarchMonday! We have received many inquiries recently regarding the size of eastern and western monarch populations. The summer population of monarchs is not collectively assessed or quantified in real time because data are insufficient across the entire breeding range. Fortunately, monarchs roost in dense colonies over the winter, enabling us to estimate their population size more conveniently and accurately. Below are a few resources about quantifying summer populations, what influences summer populations, and how we track migration: 🦋Population fluctuation: Monarch abundance changes throughout the year, so you may see more or less as time passes. 🦋Location Changes: Monarch abundance differs across years and geographies; monarchs may be more abundant in one area of the country in one year and plentiful in a different area in the next. 🦋Weather & Population Size: The summer monarch population size is largely driven by weather, particularly weather on the early spring breeding grounds in the southern US. When the temperature or precipitation deviates from average conditions, the summer population will likely be smaller (Crew et al. 2019, Zylstra et al. 2021). 🦋Predicting Population Size through Weather: Monarch Watch closely watches these metrics that can impact summer monarch populations and describes how they may impact this year's population in their blog. 🦋Real-time Migration Tracking: The public can access monarch observations from Journey North and the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project in real time and compare them with those of prior years. 🦋More Migration Info: To learn more about the eastern and western monarch migrations, visit https://lnkd.in/dPEAcBNd

We're thrilled to introduce our latest team members, Lucy Gworek and Mónica Yup Chinchilla, who will be surveying CABLM lands through the fall. Last week, we kicked off the field season with an in-person training at Mount Diablo State Park, where we documented two types of milkweed—Asclepias fascicularis and Asclepias californica. The milkweed was alive with activity, hosting praying mantises, tarantula-hawk moths, Rocky Mountain clearwings, Green lynx spiders, and more. These plants are paramount for so many species beyond just monarchs. A big shoutout to Save Mount Diablo for partnering with us to survey near milkweed restoration sites in Curry Canyon. Many thanks to Frenchy & Sean for making it such a beautiful visit!
