What is Sickle Cell Disease — And Who’s Affected by it? Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder often called “the invisible disease” due to its symptoms not always being seen on the outside. It’s caused by a genetic mutation that gives blood cells a C-shape, like a sickle. These misshapen cells are fewer in number, less effective at carrying oxygen, and can cause blockages. As it is a genetic mutation, it is not contagious. Sickle cell disease affects people of many ethnic backgrounds including Africa, the Middle East, India, Greece, Italy, Central America, and South America. Anyone with symptoms who were born abroad should talk with their provider about being tested. See more: https://bit.ly/47GQjxW #Montefiore #MontefioreEinstein #SickleCellDisease #StayHealthy
