Our mission: to inspire conservation of the ocean
About us
The mission of the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the ocean. Our diverse and dedicated team works in many ways to assure the future health of the ocean and the people who depend on a healthy ocean for their survival. Our living exhibits and visit programs are considered among the best in the world. We offer free education programs for more than 100,000 schoolchildren and educators each year -- and our new Bechtel Family Center for Ocean Education and Leadership is taking that work to a new level. Rigorous science underpins all of our work to advance policies that promote ocean health in the United States and internationally. Our respected Seafood Watch program is a global leader, giving businesses and consumers the tools to transform how fish are caught and farmed around the world. Our award-winning exhibits feature the rich diversity of marine life along California’s central coast -- from sea otters and kelp forests to jellyfish and sharks. Our newest exhibition, "Into the Deep / En lo Profundo," features never-before-see animals from the deep ocean. We attract nearly 2 million visitors a year and engage 3 million followers through our social media channels. Our education programs are shaping a new generation of science-literate ocean conservation leaders, and giving educators better tools for ecosystem-based learning. We promote science-based action on behalf of key species like sea otters, sharks, and Pacific bluefin tuna. We've advocated successfully to create marine protected areas, eliminate ocean plastic pollution, and end to the shark fin trade, and we support policies to address climate change and ocean acidification, which threaten ocean health, and our own survival.

This year's celebration of #NationalMarineSanctuaryDay has even more meaning as we look forward to the official designation of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary on California’s Central Coast. Once the designation is final in early 2025, 4,500 square miles of coastal waters from Morro Bay to the Channel Islands will receive important protections to help safeguard their ecological, historical, and cultural ocean resources. It will become California’s fifth national marine sanctuary, joining Monterey Bay, Cordell Bank, Greater Farallones, and Channel Islands national marine sanctuaries. https://lnkd.in/gWfQWTtG #NationalMarineSanctuary #CaliforniaCoast #MarineProtectedArea

Inspiring 72 million visitors, engaging 2.7 million schoolchildren we've hosted for free education programs, making major progress in creating marine protected areas along the California coast, recovering sea otters and Pacific bluefin tuna, moving seafood production worldwide in a more sustainable direction, reducing single-use plastic at the source, progressing toward a global plastics treaty -- and so much more to come. It's been an incredible 40 years, thanks to an amazing staff, thousands of dedicated volunteers, and the support of members, donors, and a growing global community of ocean lovers -- and ocean activists. We're so grateful for your support!
Today, October 20, 2024 marks 40 years since the Monterey Bay Aquarium first opened our doors to the public. I remember that day as if it were yesterday – the excitement, the anxiety, the joy – as thousands of people streamed in the doors throughout the day. I remember the looks on their faces as they got their first look at what we hoped would be an inspiring, transformational experience of the living ocean just outside our doors. Forty years later, I’m absolutely in awe of all that our team has accomplished to make the Aquarium a globally renowned institution, known for bringing to light the authentic ocean and the myriad forms of life that teem under its surface. I'm equally awed by the many ways we've been able to engage others and take action to protect and restore the ocean. The beautiful Monterey Bay inspired the creation of the aquarium that bears its name. In the long run, the true test of our success is the health of the bay itself, and the ocean beyond. This morning, the bay is teeming with life in a spectacle of wheeling pelicans, soaring gulls, rafting sea otters, and – beyond the kelp forest – humpback whales, as if to say, “See, the ocean can recover, if humans give it half a chance.” I can’t wait to see what’s next for the ocean. It’s a heavy lift to achieve our vision of a flourishing ocean and thriving people, but we’re on our way. My deepest thanks to each and every one of you for sharing the journey with us! https://lnkd.in/gX4N-gjJ #ActForTheOcean #inspiration #awe #MarineLife #aquarium #anniversary #40Years #NationalMarineSanctuary @

In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we’re highlighting the Quinault Indian Nation’s green-rated northern razor clam fishery. After fighting for decades for recognition of their treaty fishing rights, the Quinault Indian Nation — located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington — now exclusively manages the northern razor clam harvest on their reservation and co-manages the harvest with the state within their treaty area. This fishery is rated green for environmental sustainability by Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program thanks to a strong management plan rooted in both traditional knowledge and modern science. This highly effective blend of management systems includes regular population assessments and strong policies to prevent overharvest. Northern razor clams have always been important to the Quinault. Clams were historically — and still remain — an important food in the community. Today, the razor clam harvest is also an important economic opportunity for the tribe. “It's really quite a big part of our life that comes from our tradition and our culture, and it's just something that I thoroughly enjoy,” said Quinault tribal member Jennifer McCrory, who harvests clams both commercially and for home use. Today marks an historic moment for ocean conservation with the final step to designate a new sanctuary in U.S. federal waters! The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary will protect a very special place in the ocean off California’s Central Coast -- one that is rich in biodiversity and has a deep cultural importance to Indigenous communities. This action ensures this area will be enjoyed by many generations to come. Thank you to The White House and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration! https://lnkd.in/gxPSjWsE #CHNMS #MarineSanctuary #NationalMarineSanctuary #OceanClimateAction
