My name is Julia, and I graduated from Morristown High School in 2023 as a recipient of the Clifford Starrett Scholarship. As I start my second year in college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to the Morris Educational Foundation for all of your support through this journey. During my senior year, I was experiencing a lot of financial hardships and was fully expecting to have to either go back to my home country to study or attend a community college instead. But with the help of scholarships from RPI and the MEF, I’m able to attend college without having to worry about finances or work part-time. Not only did it allow me to attend an amazing school like RPI, but it gave me the room to pursue my passions and fully dedicate myself to my studies. In my scholarship essay application, I wrote about my interests in human-centered design and technology, and how I wished to use that to further increase accessibility and peoples' quality of life. Today, at RPI, I have the opportunity to co-lead a group of 15 other undergraduate students in a research project in tandem with the University of Notre Dame exploring aspects of nonverbal communication and the cognitive abilities of non-speaking individuals. Our goal is to build a new device that allows non-speaking children on the autism spectrum or with neurodegenerative disorders to better communicate with the world in a way that feels natural to them. On the weekends, I also volunteer with a school club at a local community to teach middle and high school students how to code. I’m truly grateful for the support the Clifford Starrett Scholarship and the MEF have provided me, which is what made all of this possible. It truly inspired me to not only pursue what I love wholeheartedly but to help others and hopefully make a positive impact on the world, since so much of where I am today is thanks to the generosity of people like you. The Myles Smiled on You award is for deserving MHS alumni who exemplify Myles' many positive characteristics and have outstanding college or trade school debt.
