The Morris County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) hosted its 32nd Partners in Economic Development Awards at the Hyatt Regency Morristown this morning, recognizing key contributors to business growth and economic stability. Commissioner Director Tayfun Selen highlighted the county’s ongoing investments, including maintaining a flat county tax rate for the sixth consecutive year and allocating $900,000 for economic development and tourism. He also emphasized Morris County’s vital yet often overlooked services, such as maintaining freight rail lines, mosquito control and “library-by-mail” for homebound residents. Looking ahead, the county is preparing for America’s 250th Anniversary, with events beginning in May. The Morris County Tourism Bureau will launch a dedicated website and social media to promote local history. EDC President & CEO Meghan Hunscher noted Morris County’s $70 billion economic contribution, strong job market, and top-rated schools, reinforcing its ranking as one of the best places to live in the U.S. Impact Awards were presented to the Workforce Development Board of Northwest NJ, Morris Museum, and Community Builders.

In recognition of #WomensHistoryMonth, Morris County remembers Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan, who played a pivotal role in shaping education and charitable work in Morris County and beyond. After immigrating from Ireland in 1842 and taking her vows as a Sister of Charity in New York, she arrived in New Jersey in 1857 to lead the newly established Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth. Under her leadership, the order founded its motherhouse in Convent Station in 1860 and went on to establish several institutions, including the Academy of Saint Elizabeth and the College of Saint Elizabeth—the first four-year women’s college in New Jersey, founded in 1899. She also helped develop local infrastructure, petitioning the railroad to create a stop at Convent Station and donating land for the station house. Mother Mehegan’s vision and leadership left a lasting impact on Morris County. In October, Commissioner Christine Myers attended the 30th Annual Harvest Festival to honor the Sisters of Charity’s 165 years of service.
