As the temperatures start to drop here in Hampton Roads; here are some helpful winterizing tips to keep your home pest free! 1. Seal Cracks and Gaps Pests like rodents, spiders, and cockroaches can squeeze through even the smallest openings. Inspect the exterior of your home, paying attention to areas around windows, doors, vents, and utility pipes. Use caulk to seal any cracks, and apply weather stripping around doors and windows to keep unwanted visitors out. Check your foundation for gaps as well. 2. Keep Your Home Clean Pests are attracted to food sources, so keeping your home clean is essential. Wipe down countertops, sweep floors, and promptly store food in airtight containers. Don’t leave pet food or water out overnight, and make sure trash is tightly sealed. Regularly vacuum to remove crumbs, pet hair, and other debris that may attract pests. 3. Store Firewood Away from the House Firewood is a common hiding place for pests like termites, ants, and rodents. To prevent them from finding their way into your home, store firewood at least 20 feet away from the exterior walls and keep it elevated off the ground. Bring in only the amount of wood you need for immediate use to avoid pests hitching a ride indoors. 4. Maintain Your Yard Fall and winter debris, such as fallen leaves and dead plants, can provide shelter for pests. Rake up leaves, trim overgrown bushes, and clear any clutter from your yard to eliminate hiding places.
