The costs associated with running large language models (LLMs) have fallen significantly, making advanced natural language processing techniques more accessible than ever before. The emergence of small language models (SLMs) like gpt-4o-mini has led to another order of magnitude in cost reductions for very capable language models. This democratization of AI has reached a stage where integrating small language models (SLMs) like OpenAI’s gpt-4o-mini directly into a scalar SQL function has become practicable from both cost and performance perspectives. We’re thrilled to announce the prompt() function, which is now available in Preview on MotherDuck.

The talks from #dbtcoalesce are live in youtube, which means I get to highlight my favorite - MotherDuck's own Alex Monahan talking about using dbt & MotherDuck! It is of course the source of one my favorite slides too 😉 I'll drop links to this one and a few more in the comments.

DuckDB’s greatest strength is also its greatest challenge: Its versatility makes it so powerful that it can be tricky to figure out which practical use cases to focus on. But worry no more—Simon Späti dives deep into 5 pragmatic categories to help you make the most of it. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_UNW-Hy No more reason to hold back—time to quack! 🦆 #duckdb

had a great time in Vegas at #dbtcoalesce, but I want to talk about something lurking beneath the surface. I saw an incredibly slick demo of Snowflake and Databricks interoperability, powered by Iceberg & dbt Labs’s dbt mesh. This may not seem like much, but its a big deal. And that is my biggest take away from the conference this year: Apache Iceberg is coming, whether we are ready for it or not. While I was mostly busy at the booth with the rest of the MotherDuck team, the talks I attended served to reinforce that dbt is thinking strategically about its place in the data space. I am excited about the offerings of dbt cloud for teams both big and small, and what we can do at MotherDuck to bring the magic of dual execution to the Data Warehouse. PS - DuckDB added some enhancements for Iceberg reads in the latest release, for an even speedier experience 🦆
