  Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, a momentous day in American history commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all slaves were free. Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth. This happened two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.
