We all deserve access to high quality healthcare. The California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) operates a wide range of health workforce programs to assure Californians have access to high quality care. In the Spring of 2023, HCAI partnered with the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity to conduct an equity analysis of the award making and administrative processes for 29 HCAI programs with funding support from the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF). Over an 18-month period, we conducted a comprehensive review of HCAI programs and a national scan of best practices relevant to HCAI’s equity goals, and provided 19 recommendations that HCAI can implement to strengthen the impact of their health workforce development programs through their award making and administrative processes. These results are now available on HCAI’s Research Data Center page. In their new Forefront article, Finn Dobkin Finn Dobkin, Julia Strasser, Patricia Pittman, and Edward S. Salsberg of the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity discuss how the policies proposed by Project 2025, if implemented, could fundamentally reshape not only the landscape of reproductive health access, but also the broader health care workforce in problematic ways that extend far beyond what has been observed in individual states. "Among the ideas floated by the leaders of Project 2025 are significant changes to reproductive health and labor law, both of which could impact the ability of clinicians to practice within the full scope of their training, as well as their ability to shape workplace conditions to benefit patient health and safety. With advocates and practitioners alike already concerned about access, burnout, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health workforce, the policy platform presented by Project 2025 would likely have significant ramifications for the health workforce, as well as downstream public health impacts." “Solutions to the problem of health worker despair and attrition must include addressing the drivers that cause burnout and moral injury, which are both relational and operational.” Janice Blanchard, Lauren Munoz, Margaret Ziemann, & Patricia Pittman wrote a response to a recent article about physician suicide rates, to emphasize the drivers that can lead to depression and suicide and call for relational and operational changes to tackle burnout and moral injury. https://lnkd.in/eRGcTbcg Learn more about healthcare burnout and moral injury, plus a library of resources, at www.wpchange.org #WorkplaceWellnessWednesday

An article from the Workplace Change Collaborative was awarded Editor's Choice in the recent edition of the journal of the American Psychological Association. 👏 This article investigated facilitators and barriers to implementation of evidence-informed strategies to address burnout and improve mental health among the health workforce. "Findings suggest health and public safety organizations continued to struggle with staffing post-COVID, increasing the challenges of implementing their programs to improve burnout and well-being. However, just 18 months into their activities, grantees reported their efforts were leading to changes in organizations, culture, and the experiences of individuals." There are a lot of questions you can answer using Medicaid contraceptive workforce tracker (https://lnkd.in/eTTAqJ_Z), here’s how you can use it: 📊 When looking at the “provider to population ratio,” learn about the number of Medicaid providers who are providing contraception care in proportion to the Medicaid population of females aged 15-44. This will help answer questions like “how many family medicine physicians who provide contraception are there in the state of Illinois compared to every 100,000 women of reproductive age in the state?” 📊 If you select “% Participating” under the menu option “measure” you’ll notice a new option show up in the menu called “denominator”. Depending on what you select for the denominator, this will show you: (A) Of all providers in the US, what percent of them provide contraception & bill Medicaid for it? (B) Of all providers in the US who accept Medicaid, what percent of them provide contraception & bill Medicaid for it? (C) Of all providers in the US who accept Medicaid AND provide care to reproductive age women, what percent of them provide contraception & bill Medicaid for it? What questions do you have that you want to explore? Let us know in the comments below.
