Yesterday was International Refugee Day, honoring the resilience of refugees worldwide. In 2024, the U.S. has welcomed over 65,000 refugees through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) and is on track to welcome the most refugees in a single year in the modern history of the program. With an ambitious goal of 125,000 admissions set for FY 2024, the U.S. reaffirms its commitment to providing safety and opportunity for vulnerable populations. The language services industry, including MLT, plays a crucial role in this effort. Our interpreters help refugees navigate the asylum process, ensuring they are heard and understood. Multilingual Technologies (MLT) stands firmly with the Association of Language Companies (ALC), the American Translators Association (ATA), the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), and other esteemed organizations in advocating for practical reforms to enhance the efficiency of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and improve language access. For most of the past 20 years, asylum applicants have been required to bring their own interpreters to their hearings, with their performance monitored in real-time by USCIS contract interpreters. The ALC has argued against this policy, submitting a detailed letter to the US Department of Homeland Security, advocating for the use of qualified USCIS interpreters, whether contract or staff, to handle these interpretation efforts directly. This change would ensure impartiality and enhance the overall efficiency of the asylum process.
