In a moment where every second counted, Police Officer Thomas Schmeltzer and Detective Amy Suarez of New York Police Department Mounted Unit charged forward, leading their horses where cars couldn’t go. Their swift actions saved a special-needs child from danger, reminding us of the power of community and the heroism behind the badge. At a ceremony at Mounted Unit headquarters, we awarded them the MCU Hero Award to honor their bravery, not just as officers, but as protectors of our most vulnerable. About us
Municipal Credit Union has been serving the financial needs of our members since 1916. The credit union was chartered in response to the concern of New York City Mayor, John Purroy Mitchel, who wanted city employees to have a way to save at reasonable rates and a low cost borrowing alternative to loan sharks. MCU started out with one branch in the Municipal building using handwritten ledgers. At the end of the first year, nineteen charter account holders had combined deposits of $570. Today, we have 16 branches, more than 600,000 members and over $4.2 billion in assets.
