Renowned artist Carrie Mae Weems has been awarded the 2024 National Medal of Arts, a prestigious honor recognizing her groundbreaking contributions to American art. Weems, the first Black female visual artist to receive this award, has spent four decades exploring themes of politics, feminism, and African American identity through a diverse practice spanning photography, film, installation, and performance. Munson is proud to have a piece of Weems' work in our permanent collection, pictured here, with another currently on view in "Modern Women / Modern Vision: Photographs from the Bank of America Collection."
