Join us next Sunday on October 13 for Play Day! MCASD admission will be free for visitors all day. Inspired by a piece in 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 (1993) by Beverly Buchanan, bring the entire family to MCASD and make sprouting sculptures using recycled materials, popsicle sticks, clay, and seeds. Play Day is a monthly event at the Museum, designed for families to explore art together. Activities include special tours, hands-on projects, at-your-own-pace guides, and storytime with Librarian On the Go Ms. Katia. Centered at the Conrad Prebys Learning Center and extending into the galleries and terraces, each Play Day offers new and engaging ways to experience the artworks on display. No RSVPs are needed to attend Play Day. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gs8KKvKe [Photography: Delana Delgado]

Maren Hassinger came to fine arts and performance through a background in dance. A communion of forms and fascinations materializes in this steel sculpture whose aesthetic is based in Minimalism with a postminimalist affect. Made by a Black artist working in Los Angeles's vibrant arts scene, 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 (1975) connotes a felt awareness of marginalization and a lived experience of the restrictions placed on Black mobility. See 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 (1975) on view in MCASD’s permanent collection galleries in La Jolla. To create 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵's richly textured surface, Mely Barragán slowly accreted layers of paint, lace, and fabric. The resulting abstract composition evinces the accretive process and draws focus to its black-lacquered lace and fabric. Though its palette is uncharacteristic for an artist who typically works with bright florals, this work relies on Barragan's signature practice of collage, a technique steeped in traditions of feminist and consumerist critique. Completed while the artist was recovering from a series of medical procedures, 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 makes allusions to the body – both its inner workings and its outward, hand-crafted labor. See 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 (2017) on view in MCASD’s permanent collection galleries in La Jolla Thursday to Saturday from 11AM – 7PM and Sunday from 11AM – 5PM. Her white silhouette is continuous with the ground of the painting’s lower section, which suggests a horizon line on either side of her. The “X-Ray Woman’s” torso reveals an aerial view of complex internal landscape Looking to the right, she wears a blue star-speckled bathing cap and goggles, as if set to plunge into water.
