Last month, as world leaders met for the UN General Assembly, MPAC called for sanctions on Israeli Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich and Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir for their extremist ideologies and open support of genocide against the Palestinian people. Despite his own team's recommendations, President Biden refused to act. Five students at Occidental College are facing disciplinary charges after participating in a peaceful protest on campus. It is essential students are not intimidated or punished for expressing their conscience. On this #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we honor the strength and resilience of the many tribal nations around the world. Your contributions to this land have not gone unnoticed. As we acknowledge the rich contributions of our indigenous brothers and sisters, we must also step back and recognize the painful legacy of colonialism, genocide and the forced displacement of native populations from their ancestral lands. Generations later, these horrific acts continue to impact access to resources, economic opportunities, and cultural preservation. As we work to create a path forward, it is essential that we take the time to listen, learn, and uplift Indigenous voices in their ongoing fight for justice, equity, and sovereignty. MPAC stands with Indigenous communities across the globe as we continue to advocate for the protection and preservation of tribal lands, heritage, and traditions.
