Did you know that chemical hair relaxers, widely used by Black women, are linked to serious health risks? Research shows these products can contribute to early puberty, reproductive issues, and even breast and uterine cancer. Despite being common and convenient, these relaxers contain harmful endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Burns and abrasions from application make it easier for these toxins to enter the body. We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved board member and fierce advocate, Marlena Murphy. Marlena joined the @mystylematters family as a Volunteer Patient Advocate and quickly became an integral part of our board, where she dedicated herself to empowering and supporting others navigating the challenges of breast cancer. Marlena’s journey with us began after her own diagnosis of stage III triple-negative breast cancer at the age of 40. Despite the severity of her diagnosis, she turned her personal battle into a broader fight for all those affected by breast cancer. On numerous occasions, Marlena would take the time out of her day to support our warriors in every way possible. Marlena’s resilience and dedication were truly inspirational, not only to those of us at My Style Matters but to everyone in the wider cancer community. She continued her advocacy and support, touching lives and making real changes, even as she faced her own re-diagnosis with metastatic TNBC. Her commitment to helping others extended beyond her work with cancer advocacy. While fighting cancer, she returned to school and earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, specializing in Marriage & Family Therapy and Christian Sex Therapy. She dedicated her professional life to helping the most vulnerable, providing therapy services to individuals experiencing homelessness, as well as to other breast cancer patients and survivors in downtown Atlanta. The My Style Matters community mourns the loss of a remarkable woman whose spirit and courage transformed countless lives. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Marlena’s father and daughter and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Marlena’s legacy will continue to inspire and impact our community. In memory of Marlena’, we pledge to continue the work she so passionately championed. Her vision and voice will forever be a part of My Style Matters. Rejoice in heaven, Marlena.
