About us
Mycocycle develops and licenses a process to minimize waste, create new biobased raw materials and reduces greenhouse gases using fungi. #fungifriday Mycocycle, Inc. is 6! 🎉 Tomorrow marks our “official” 6th year of business. The day the idea of ‘training mushrooms to eat trash’ was filed as a company. I didn’t launch the company until 2-years later though. Why? Because I wasn’t sure who would buy it, how to build it, the team to develop it…I didn’t know how to incubate this idea to an actual business solution. There are 100 million good ideas out there (cyber-truck excluded). But do they solve a problem or fill a need? More importantly, will someone buy it? As a climate activist, a sustainability/business leader, and a mom I felt I had a responsibility to figure out how to solve an enormous problem: one that my professional career was actively fueling. I have a strong belief that once you see a problem, you can’t unsee it. I had to take a first step. I’m grateful to all of the steps that have gotten our company, business, and solution set to market. In particular though, I’m proud of all the “first steps” that took a chance on us: the Chicago ecosystem (1871 was my day 1 experience in entrepreneurship), the cleantech community (Cleantech Open was my first accelerator), the national labs (I launched through National Renewable Energy Laboratory Industry Growth Forum in 2020), our first clients (FieldTurf ), our first commercial partnership (Tarkett), and our first investors (Anthropocene Ventures, TELUS Pollinator Fund for Good, and Lofty Ventures). There are so many firsts when you’re building from the ground up, each and everyone of them vitally important. As I reflect on what we’ve accomplished to date, I’m incredibly proud. Our technology will revolutionize supply chains world wide. And while this won’t be the first time I say this, it definitely won’t be the last: THANK YOU! Thank you for the encouragement, the support, the counsel, the mentorship. Building a #FOAK is super f^%&ing hard but it doesn’t have to be. It’s easier every day because of our team, because of your support, and because of the fundamental belief that we have a responsibility to give back more to this earth than what we take. 🌎 Take a look at what we’ve been up too ⤵️… HAPPY BIRTHDAY MYCOCYCLE! 🍄🟫🍄🎂 https://lnkd.in/gAyuMWUS

🏫 With an ever-growing population and demand for private and public buildings, how do we make our concrete jungles greener? I recently got to chat with Mycocycle, Inc. founder Joanne Rodriguez, LEED AP, FitWel Amb, CDT, Mycocycle, Inc., and MOGU Marketing Manager Paola Dengo to find out how 🍄 mycelium 🍄 is being developed to transform industrial waste into new products for the construction industry. 🔃 Way to go circular don't you think? Thank you J.A. Ginsburg for featuring Mycocycle, Inc. in this piece. We appreciate the non-linear thought processes of what “could be” through hyper-focused efforts in innovation. When people go down the road of “what if” the conclusions are frequently: the opportunity is too big, it could never come to bear. But what if the conclusion was: the opportunity has already scaled (in nature) so there is no way it wouldn’t be big. The point I’m making here is that our process, while powering the circular economy, is also rooted in the strong belief that nature is the OG innovator. Ever resilient, nature based solutions are time tested and effective. Nature is also pretty scalable (hint, take a look outside). We don’t aspire to be all things to all people, but as Janet points out with her checklist—we do check all the boxes by design. The intention is to do what nature has taught us already while applying the all so important number 7 on the checklist: riffing. While nature is our guide, the human powered innovation comes through a big dose of #7. Thanks again for the piece, I’m truly flattered and my team will continue to dream (and do) big. 👏🏻🍄

How do you know if your idea is any good? Could make a difference? Has a shot at success? The last of three “Think Different” posts gets into the metrics. It’s really two essays, with connections (also, some JON BATISTE jazz riffing, Carl Sagan reading “Pale Blue Dot,” a dash of the Adjacent Possible, and a generous side of Mycocycle, Inc. mushrooms because they always make everything better). The Circularity Dividend is the systemic transformation that comes from the connections between circles (businesses, organizations and policies that embrace Circularity). In nature, the number and variety of connections correlates to the strength and resilience of an ecosystem. At critical mass, an increasingly dense tangle of arcs, loops, spirals, dovetails and links between circles , marks the transformation of an economic system. We tend to focus on the circularity of a business model or sector, comparing it against a linear, business-as-usual benchmark. That’s useful. But the magic—and strength and resilience— is in the dynamism of a system. The Circularity Dividend is a thriving, livable planet which, of course, is the only metric that really matters. This part of the post also includes a backgrounder on Circularity, beginning with Rachel Carson, whose warning of a world so thoroughly poisoned by petrochemicals that not a single bird was left to sing (“Silent Spring”) inspired “Cradle to Cradle.” https://lnkd.in/gFvRsDwt Jon Smieja Leland Maschmeyer Cas Malo Amy Larkin Stephanie Wolcott Robert C.
