It feels particularly fitting to add to our "A Day in the Life of a SAR K9 Handler" series right now, given the current circumstances. Today, we’re highlighting Kayla Hardin, a dedicated Search and Rescue (SAR) K9 handler in California, who has been serving for nearly 20 years. Kayla's journey into SAR began when a family friend went missing, and her natural desire to help pushed her to pursue this path. She became certified in 2005 after completing the academy, and in 2012, she returned to the field with her dog, Darwin. Since then, the duo has been making a significant impact in their volunteer mission to locate the missing. We are excited to announce our recent partnership with Spike’s K9 Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting K9 working dogs and their handlers. MYOS is committed to aiding K9 handlers, search and rescue (SAR) teams, and working dogs nationwide, recognizing their crucial role in saving lives. Spike’s K9 Fund provides protective equipment, covers the costs of critical medical treatments, and offers life-saving training courses at no expense to handlers or departments across the United States. Did you know that most domestic violence shelters are not pet-friendly? The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) within the Dept of Justice, is trying to change that. By 2025, they aim to make 25% of domestic violence shelters pet-friendly. This is so needed for these victims to be able to have this human-animal bond, for emotional security, safety, and therapy. Fewer than 1 in 5 shelters across the U.S. have on-site pet programs. ;o( Domestic violence victims are 50% less likely to leave an abusive situation because they do not want to abandon their pets. And, most abusers also abuse pets within a household. The OVC announced the availability of this grant program linked here on this post. This grant, which was authorized through the PAWS Act (Pet and Women Safety Act), supports the expansion of shelter and housing assistance for survivors of domestic violence with companion animals. OVC expects to make up to 10 awards of $500,000. I am sharing this news within my network so that more shelters are aware of this grant program and can assist with keeping those victims of domestic violence together with their pets when they need that companionship most.
