My husband and I pay $5,000 a month for childcare for our four kids. When people hear this, the immediate question is often directed at me: "Why do you work?" The assumption is that because childcare is so expensive, it would make more sense for me, the mother, to stay home. But in our case, my husband and I have similar earnings, and stepping away from my career for 5-10 years would have long-term consequences. Childcare costs are temporary, but the impact on my career would be lasting. In just a few years, when all my children are in school full-time, my childcare costs will decrease, and I’ll be in a stronger position professionally. My life plan extends beyond these next few years of high childcare costs—I’m planning for the next 20-30 years of our lives. Instead of asking why I work, the real question should be why childcare is so expensive and inaccessible. The costs are high, but I’m investing in my future, my career, and ultimately, my family. #WorkingMom #ChildcareCrisis #affordablechildcare
