We're recognizing the individuals that are actively supporting commercial/industrial refrigeration. The following is a brief look into Shane O'Connor background and what advice he has to share with others. How did you get introduced to industrial refrigeration? Like many others in my generation, I went to college because everyone told me that was the best decision for me. After completing a year and half studying mechanical and steam engineering, I decided going into the workforce was the better decision for me. My uncle owned an industrial refrigeration company and offered me an opportunity to go to work. The rest is history. What part of the job makes you want to stay in this industry? As a business owner, my goals and motivations have shifted slightly from when I was an employee. What motivated me before was being capable of learning and performing all tasks and work related to industrial refrigeration to build my reputation as a the most capable. My motivation now to stay in the industry is being able to provide an ideal work environment for people looking for opportunities to succeed in their career in this industry while also providing unparalleled service and product to clients. What recent industry related challenge have you conquered and are proud to have prevail over? We recently took over all Refrigeration PM work for a large food manufacturer. We have been able to reduce the quantity of service calls from 10+ a month to maybe 1 a week by providing honest and thorough PM ITMs. What is your favorite job task that you enjoy in this field? Troubleshooting is by far my favorite task. Being able to identify a problem, suggest the solution, and implement that solution to make a customer happy and relieved that their equipment is once again reliable. If you could give your younger self advice when you first started, what advice would that be? Keep doing what you're doing. Set high goals and do what it takes to achieve them. When in doubt, ask questions. Don't be afraid to grow your network and use all your resources. What professional accomplishment do you aspire within the next three years? In the next three years I hope to expand our Field Services Team to help serve more of our client base that is in need of the honest and thorough service that we provide. Thank you, Shane, for your continued support to keep this industry cool & safe. Note: if you would like to be spotlighted and are experienced in this field, please send us a message for more details.

When is ammonia piping required to be replaced when it has encountered metal loss? The RAGAGEP we’re going to reference is ANSI/IIAR. It’s not a clear-cut answer that you would expect. ANSI/IIAR doesn’t require a specific wall thickness minimum for replacing carbon steel ammonia piping. But they do provide a recommended wall thickness table for referencing in ANSI/IIAR 6 appendixes. If a 1” pipe nominal wall thickness “new” started at 0.179”; the table recommends replacing the pipe when corrosion has reached 0.054”. The remaining percentage from nominal at this point is 30%. ANSI/IIAR actually leaves it up to the owner “employer” for determining when the carbon steel piping should be replaced. So, an owner could write in their company policy that any piping containing ammonia refrigerant shall be replaced when remaining wall thickness has reached 50% from nominal. Your minimum wall thickness threshold is how you know when to take action. Once this minimum metal loss threshold has been reached, the pipe should be immediately isolated, pumped out, LOTO, and documented. The piping being able to contain the systems design pressure is the biggest risk. This poll is directed towards industries that follow 29 CFR 1910.146 Even though there is a depth requirement, we always recommend using a mechanical retrieval system when possible for all vertical permit space entries if it does not pose additional risks to safety and health.

Should on-site response teams that follow HAZWOPER requirements, at a minimum, be equipped with high-quality self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs) featuring a pak-alert distress system, an emergency breathing support system (EBSS), and a rapid intervention crew-universal air connection (RIC-UAC)?

Understanding the behaviors of fluid viscosity at different temperatures is important for maintaining equipment. Precision made components are made with very close tolerances. Protecting the two rubbing surfaces from unwanted wear is going to increase the lifespan of the equipment. After the poll is closed, we’ll put more details on this subject in the comment section.
