Mentorship programs fail for four reasons: bandwidth, volunteer burnout, mentor shortage, and unclear results. But it doesn’t have to be that way! In this #ShiftTalk episode, Stacy Cassio, CEO of Pink Mentor Network, explains how companies can shift from viewing mentorship as a “program” to embedding it into the DNA of their workplace culture. HR can’t carry the load alone—mentorship needs to be part of the daily work, not treated as extra work. "But today’s workforce is different. They won't work inflexible schedules and have enough options to simply leave." 👇

The 40-hour workweek in manufacturing and distribution is dead. Strict schedules no longer work for the modern workforce. Now, I know what you're going to say, "Todd, we run a tight ship and need to know that people are going to show up every day when they say they will." I 100% agree. Machines need operators to run, and warehouses need workers to move pallets. Without people, the entire system collapses. But the rigid schedule model is failing. The more companies cling to it, the more they suffer. The new generation of workers won’t tolerate the inflexibility that demands they show up 5-6 days a week without fail or face termination. We see it every day—companies unable to hire or retain workers yet continue to fire them for a single missed shift. But today’s workforce is different. They won't work inflexible schedules and have enough options to simply leave. So, what's the solution? Adaptation. It’s not as difficult as it sounds and it doesn't need to create chaos.  Start by changing the way you handle entry-level workers. You don’t need to overhaul your entire plant, just adjust your approach at the sub $20/hr level. Give this group some controlled flexibility in their schedule - a Friday off this week, swapping their Wednesday for a Saturday another week. The more reliable you are, the more choices you get. Reward the behavior you want. You might even find that these changes benefit the entire workforce (like we have) and it leads to broader adaptation and success.

"We can all agree the world has changed. Embrace flexibility, find creative solutions, and work with the tide instead of against it."👇

Let's be honest, no one's excited about going to work at 5:00am to move boxes in a warehouse for twelve hours at $16.50 an hour. It's easy to label today's workforce as lazy. And to be honest, it doesn't matter if they are. There are hundreds of other entry-level jobs out there that they can start at tomorrow.  My generation didn't have those options. You took what work you could get, worked hard, and were thankful for the opportunity. Tell a worker today that they can't take Friday off and they'll walk out the door faster than you can say forklift. Schedules that worked in the past won't cut it anymore. Trying to force hourly workers to put in longer shifts and mandating OT is only making the problem worse. Every company I talk to is struggling with turnover. You can choose to ignore the issue and complain all you want, but that's not going to change reality. It's time to adapt. We can all agree that the world has changed. Embrace flexibility, find creative solutions, and work with the tide instead of against it. Once I did, everything fell into place, and some of the world's largest manufacturers and distributors are now wondering why they didn't try this earlier.
