He honed his skills at Princeton, majoring in economics, and later as a stockbroker at William Blair & Company. In 1983, he founded Ariel Investments, focusing on patient value investing in small- and medium-sized companies. His expertise earned him accolades, including co-mutual fund manager of the year and recognition alongside legendary investors in "The World’s 99 Greatest Investors." Beyond investing, John serves on the boards of Nike, The New York Times Company, and Ryan Specialty, and he is a trustee at the University of Chicago. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a director at the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. In 2008, he received Princeton's Woodrow Wilson Award for national service and co-chaired the Presidential Inaugural Committee in 2009.
