October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Create a healthy workplace for employees with disabilities with inclusive health and wellness practices. A few to think about are: • Health and Wellness Programs- Offer disabled employees accessible health and wellness programs that give information about ways to stop tobacco use and prevent cancer. Some ways to make sure your programs are accessible include: Partnering with health care providers who understand disability; offering virtual appointment options, and/or accessible transportation to appointments, and having sign language interpreters, resources in braille, easy-read and plain language styles. • Inclusive Workplace Wellness Committees- Make sure your workplace wellness groups include people with disabilities so they can help plan wellness programming and disability is a part of the conversation. • Cancer Education and Awareness Campaigns- Create workplace projects that bring awareness to the connection between tobacco use and cancer. Make sure resources are accessible to all employees and inclusive of people with different access needs. #DisabilityInclusionNetwork #NDEAM Image Description: A navy-blue background with text “National Disability Employment Awareness Month”, #NDEAM and website dol.gov/odep. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). One way to ensure people with disabilities access to a healthy workplace is through inclusive workplace policies. Here are some polices to think about during NDEAM: • Smoke-Free Workplace Policies- Create and apply policies to end indoor/outdoor e-cigarette and tobacco use to limit people breathing in harmful smoke. • Health Screening Policies- Create a workplace rule that gives all employees paid time off for cancer/health screenings. Pro Tip: Work with your employees to find accessible, local screening places. • Flexible Work Accommodations: Design policies that support reasonable work accommodations so employees with disabilities know they have flexible work options. #DisabilityInclusionNetwork #NDEAM Image Description: A navy-blue background with text “National Disability Employment Awareness Month”, #NDEAM and website dol.gov/odep.
