This week, MJ Palazzolo, ASCS, CVI, had the opportunity to represent NADCA at the Air Distribution Institute's (ADI) Fall Meeting in Chicago! MJ spoke about the importance of the ACR Standard, the limitations we face in the field, and shared key insights on what we look for when assessing a system. They also discussed suggestions for manufacturing improvements, particularly how we can collaborate with ADI to create duct systems that are easier to clean and more efficient to maintain — a win-win for everyone in the HVAC industry! We're shoulders deep in our next research project with public schools in Colorado. Our goal is to prove through hard data that air duct cleaning is necessary to maintain healthy indoor air for our kids. More updates coming soon [This photo shows Tyler Batchelder, ASCS, CVI, inspecting ductwork outside of a classroom. Tyler is an IAQ pro who volunteers on NADCA's Scientific Committee, is Chair of the Colorado School Study Task Force, and serves as Co-Chair of the Energy Study Task Force.]

The DEDP Standard is a detailed checklist of performance measurements designed to ensure residential single-dryer exhaust duct systems operate at peak performance. Developed by NADCA, this standard allows HVAC technicians to assess the condition of dryer vent systems and address inefficiencies that could lead to potential fire hazards, reduced dryer performance, or increased energy consumption.

These common issues should be assessed during every inspection. 🧹Dust and Debris Accumulation: Over time, dust and debris can build up in the ducts, reducing airflow and contaminating the air being circulated. ☠️Mold Growth: Mold can develop in ducts where moisture is present, leading to health problems for occupants and damage to the HVAC system. 🐜Pest Infestations: Rodents and insects can make their way into the ductwork, causing blockages, spreading contaminants, and damaging the ducts. ⚠️Structural Damage: Cracks, gaps, or disconnections in the ductwork can lead to air leaks, reducing the efficiency of the HVAC system and increasing energy costs. 💨Airflow Obstructions: Any blockage or restriction in the ductwork can cause uneven heating or cooling and strain the HVAC system.
