Higher education often focuses on teaching professionalism to prepare students for careers, but these standards usually reflect middle-class norms that may not align with the realities of low-income students. In the new October issue of the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, researchers Rosemary Perez, Ph.D., Genia Bettencourt, Ph.D., Liane Hypolite, Ph.D., and Ronald Hallett, Ph.D., examined how a college transition program for low-income students socialized them to notions of professionalism. A must read and let’s understand censoring higher ed takes many forms as noted in this report. The earlier conversations on the threats to higher ed were siloed, including the so-called “anti-DEI” efforts/legislation, academic freedom, and “gag orders”.
