About us
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is a major U.S. laboratory for developing and operating unmanned scientific spacecraft. The center manages many of NASA's Earth observation, astronomy, planetary science and astrophysics missions. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, is home to the nation's largest organization of scientists, engineers and technologists who build spacecraft, instruments and new technology to study Earth, the sun, our solar system and the universe. Just outside Washington, Goddard is home to Hubble operations and the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. Goddard manages communications between mission control and orbiting astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Goddard scientists stare into the sun, grind up meteorites for signs of life's building blocks, look into the farthest reaches of space, and untangle the mysteries of our own changing world. Goddard engineers construct sensitive instruments, build telescopes that peer into the cosmos, and operate the test chambers that ensure those satellites' survival. Named for American rocketry pioneer Dr. Robert H. Goddard, the center was established May 1, 1959, as NASA's first space flight complex. Goddard and its several installations are critical in carrying out NASA's missions of space exploration and scientific discovery. Goddard encompasses several other NASA properties, most significantly: • Wallops Flight Facility near Chincoteague, Virginia • Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Facility in Fairmont, West Virginia • Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City • White Sands Complex outside Las Cruces, New Mexico • Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas

Engineering exploration 🌟 Dr. Xiaoyi Li is an instrument systems engineer at Goddard. She works on NASA's DAVINCI mission to Venus and the Geospace Dynamics Constellation mission. For DAVINCI, Xiaoyi works on Venus Atmosphere Structure Investigation (VASI), leading the technical team to develop a sensor suite that will help measure pressure, temperature, and wind speed while the DAVINCI probe descends through Venus’ atmosphere. And, for the Geospace Dynamics Constellation mission, Xiaoyi assists the lead in instrument development for the Comprehensive Auroral Precipitation Experiment (CAPE). Calibration, validation, action! 🌊 Dr. Fernanda Henderikx-Freitas is the lead principal investigator of the PACE validation team called HOT-PACE. At Station ALOHA, about 62.1 miles north of Oahu, she and her team collected oceanographic data to help validate data from NASA’s PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite. The instruments they use closely compare to what PACE uses up in orbit. Some of the data points they collected include seawater samples, the way light interacts with particles in the water, the light profile in the water column, and how well the satellite can see through the atmosphere to the ocean. Six teams connected to Goddard projects have received funding! NASA has awarded $6 million to 20 teams from emerging research institutions across the U.S. to support projects that offer career development opportunities for STEM students. This is the third round of seed funding awarded through the agency’s MOSAICS (Mentoring and Opportunities in STEM with Academic Institutions for Community Success) program, formerly the Science Mission Directorate Bridge Program. The program seeks to expand access to NASA research opportunities in the science and engineering disciplines, as well as to NASA’s workforce. Flying higher at Goddard Bindu Rani studies supermassive black holes at Goddard using both space-based and ground-based observations. When she was a little girl, she wanted to fly as a pilot, but studying for her master’s, she looked to space, black holes and neutron stars. Today, Rani is the Swift Guest Investigator Program lead scientist for the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. She leads the program, including managing proposals, staffing, conducting reviews, and supporting the users. Swift is an amazing mission because it provides X-rays, ultraviolet imaging and optical observations of all different kinds of astronomical objects including exoplanets, stars and black holes that range in size up to billions of solar masses.
