  • On Oct. 3, NATCA member James Walsh (Raleigh-Durham ATCT, RDU) attended an event in the Raleigh-area with three members of Congress– U.S. Rep. Glenn Ivey (Md.-4), U.S. Rep. Deborah Ross (N.C.-2), and U.S. Rep. Don Davis (N.C.-1). North Carolina was hit by Hurricane Helene just days prior to the event, so it was at the forefront of conversation. Rep. Ross and Davis spoke about the impact of the hurricane on North Carolina. Walsh also talked to them about the air traffic control facilities that were damaged by the hurricane. Reps. Davis and Ross expressed that they were grateful for the federal response to the disaster thus far.

  • On Sept. 21, NATCA members participated in Mesa, Ariz.’s third Girls in Aviation Day at Wings of Flight Foundation Hanger at Falcon Field Airport. There were over 500 attendees and no shortage of interest in air traffic control. Seeing themselves in the role of an air traffic controller provided inspiration to many of these young women who have expressed interest in aviation. Members from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway FCT (IWA) and Phoenix TRACON (P50) were present to encourage and educate attendees on what air traffic control is and how we impact the aviation industry. • On Sept. 6, U.S. Representative Robert Menendez, Jr. (N.J.-8) visited Newark Liberty ATCT (EWR). Rep. Menendez’s district includes the southern half of EWR. FacRep Mike Brennan and National Legislative Committee member Giuseppe DePinto (Newark ATCT, EWR) facilitated the tour for the congressman and two of his staffers: District Director Jeremy Julis and Sr. Legislative Assistant Rylee M. Stirn. As a former commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), Rep. Menendez was well aware of the interactions that take place between the PANYNJ and the air traffic controllers at EWR. Brennan and DePinto discussed a number of issues with Rep. Menendez, including FAA Reauthorization, controller staffing, airfield and airspace modifications, equipment and infrastructure, the N90 to PHL move, environmental sustainability, and helicopter routes/noise complaints. In a subsequent Instagram post, Rep. Menendez Jr. touted our members for “the incredible work that keeps our skies safe” and committed to providing us “with the resources necessary to do this important work as efficiently as possible.”

  • The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations (IFATCA) held its first Technical and Operations (TOC) committee meeting of this cycle from Sept. 24-26 in Madrid, Spain. NATCA was proudly represented by TOC Chair Jaymi Steinberg and Betsy Beaumont who collaborated with international colleagues to address pressing issues in aviation safety. This meeting was notable for its joint session with the International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA) Air Traffic Services committee. The collaboration allowed for the exploration of topics of shared concern, including environmental impacts, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) spoofing and jamming, and advancements in interval management — highlighted by Beaumont's paper on the subject. These discussions culminated in a joint statement on GNSS interference, emphasizing the need for continued global vigilance and coordination to protect critical navigation systems. Additionally, NATCA representatives took part in two days of TOC meetings where they reviewed essential technical policies, including Barometric Vertical Navigation (Baro-VNAV), sustainable taxiing initiatives, and protocols for communication failures. The participation of NATCA in such global discussions is vital as it ensures that the voice and expertise of U.S. air traffic controllers are present in shaping international standards. This joint session with IFALPA demonstrates the importance of cooperation between controllers and pilots in creating a safer, more efficient airspace for all. The TOC thanked Kimmo Koivula and Ignacio Baca for their invaluable assistance in organizing the meeting and to Indra for hosting the group.
