About us

NAPC provides technical support and manages an information network to help local commissions accomplish their preservation objectives. Our established education and training programs, including our biennial FORUM conference and Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP®), have provided essential training to thousands of commission members and staff. NAPC also serves as an advocate at federal, state and local levels of government to promote policies and programs that support preservation commission efforts, thanks in part to collaboration with our partner organizations in Washington, D.C.

  • This past weekend, NAPC held its first in-person Commission Assistance & Mentoring Program (CAMP) of the year in conjunction with the Saving Places Conference in Colorado Springs! 🏔️ We love facilitating statewide CAMPs that bring preservationists from different communities together. This training featured breakout sessions on Preservation Planning, offering tailored content for both beginners and intermediate participants. Our expert CAMP Trainers are ready to meet you wherever you are on your preservation journey. Huge thanks to Wade Broadhead, Adrienne Burke, AICP, Esq., and Alex Westhoff, AICP for leading this engaging and informative session! One CAMPer summed it up perfectly: "You made a long day feel short!" A special thank you to the City of Loveland for hosting this CAMP. We’re excited for more opportunities to support preservation commissions nationwide! Let's start talking about a CAMP in your community: https://lnkd.in/e4Jf-M-U #NAPCCAMP #PreservationTraining #HistoricPreservation

  • ✨ Make Your Preservation Message Stick: Use Local Examples! ✨ Talking about why preservation matters is important—but showing real-world examples makes your message powerful. Specific local stories help people connect with preservation efforts in their own communities. They prove that preservation isn’t just a concept—it’s a proven strategy that brings value and strengthens communities. • NAPC's Commission Assistance & Mentoring Program (CAMP) is offered in a VIRTUAL format. Preservation commissions across the country have found this format convenient and accessible. Last year, Frederick County, Maryland hosted their virtual CAMP in two parts which can have the added benefits of the following: 📚 Breaking the CAMP into two parts makes for shorter meeting times. 📚 The break between sessions allows information to be absorbed and questions to surface which can be addressed in Part 2. 📚 Providing two days of training can better accommodate commissioners' schedules. 📸: CAMP Trainer Sharon Bradley led presentations on Legal Basics and Meeting Procedures at Part 2 of this CAMP. What topics would you choose for a CAMP in your community? Would the virtual CAMP format make it easier to obtain training? • NAPC's Commission Assistance & Mentoring Program (CAMP) Trainers are some of the most intelligent, experienced, and creative people! During a CAMP hosted by Boone County Kentucky, CAMP Trainer, Beth Johnson, walked CAMPers through the Design Review Exercise using a prop she MADE called Ms. Muddle. Ms. Muddle helped attendees better understand character-defining features and appropriate modifications. Boone County also opted for a Post-CAMP Meeting & Report Add-on. This takes CAMP to the next level and helps a commission develop actionable steps toward their preservation goals. Thank you, Beth Johnson, Amber Stimpson and Kate Singleton who were the Trainers during this CAMP. 📸 Credit: Kate Singleton #NAPCCAMP #PreservationTraining #HistoricPreservation
