The National Aviary works to inspire respect for nature through an appreciation of birds.

About us

The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated exclusively to birds. Located in West Park on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, the National Aviary is home to more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild. The National Aviary’s large walk-through habitats create an experience unlike any other – an intimate, up-close immersive experience between visitors and free-flying birds, including opportunities to hand-feed and meet many species rarely found in zoos anywhere else in the world. As an environmental organization composed of educators, conservationists and researchers, the National Aviary’s goals are many. The National Aviary aims to provide outstanding education programming for varied audiences; present the highest quality family recreational experience that a zoological institution can offer; save endangered species by preserving natural habitats; continue endangered bird breeding programs and conduct meaningful avian research; engender a sincere appreciation of nature and a respect for natural law; and instill a conservation ethic that teaches our immense responsibility as stewards of the planet.

"Conservation biologists are celebrating a momentous occasion: they just released a small group of Extinct-In-The-Wild Guam kingfishers into the tropical rainforests of Palmyra Atoll, where they are now flying free." The Sihek Recovery Program, including the National Aviary, was recently featured in Forbes! Read the entire story, featuring the Aviary's efforts in testing radio transmitters used by biologists to track this population, here: https://lnkd.in/gWynhb_E

It’s Official: Guam Kingfishers (or sihek) now live IN THE WILD! 🙌🎉 Three of the sihek, one female (Långet) and two males (Sindålu and Mames) hatched at the National Aviary! Prior to release from their temporary aviaries on Palmyra Atoll, each bird received a physical exam to ensure they were ready to be on their own in the wild. All of the sihek received unique leg bands and temporary radio transmitter tags so that they can be monitored over the next several weeks. FUN FACT: Mames was the first bird to be released AND the radio transmitter technology was actually piloted here at the National Aviary! Talk about a full-circle moment! Stay tuned for next steps on this amazing journey as we regularly check in with these wild friends over the next few months. Thank you to our partners Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Zoological Society of London (ZSL), The Walt Disney Company (Disney's Animals, Science, and Environment), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Guam Department of Agriculture, The Nature Conservancy, and the Sihek Recovery Program! https://lnkd.in/gPqeprTa
