As we approach the upcoming elections, it’s crucial to reflect on the power of our votes and the history that shapes our participation. For African Americans, voting is not just a right; it’s a hard-fought privilege that connects us to the legacy of those who bravely fought for civil rights. Let’s not only vote but also encourage others to do the same. Host community discussions, share resources, and help people understand the voting process. Every voice counts, and every vote matters! Together, we can create change and pave the way for future generations. Register to vote or check your registration status: https://vote.gov/ Do your part and VOTE! 🗳

Statement on the Impact of Hurricane Helene From: Dr. Sheldon Fields and Dr. Shirley Evers-Manly, As a global community, we want to acknowledge all those currently dealing with the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene. With over 120 precious lives lost and over 500 miles of communities coping with power outages, hygiene challenges, and shortages of water, and food urgent action is needed. The National Black Nurses Association has long been committed to assisting in times of disaster. In light of this, we are actively reaching out to our NBNA chapters located in the various affected communities to best assess their immediate needs and determine how best we might assist at this critical time. Resources of all kinds are needed in the short and long term, and monetary donations in any amount to support our efforts can be made below. Responding to such incidents is a part of the NBNA mission and in the coming days, weeks, and months NBNA will continue to assess the situation and how we might best be of service to those impacted by the storm. Bravo to Miami Dade College, Medical Campus on a beautiful and exciting Kickoff of Changemaker week, September 16-22, 2024. Today was totally exhilarating as students and faculty had the opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a Changemaker, and what does flourishing look and feel like. In this spectacular opening, the Keynote Speaker - Kimara Ellefson, National Director of Strategy and Partnerships for the Kern National Network for Flourishing in Medicine facilitated a powerful dialogue on caring responsibilities and discussed qualities of being a Changemaker. During her inspiring session, students, faculty, and administrators were able to make connections with their "why," and reflected on their unique insights, talents/gifts and contributions, and discovered how flourishing looked like on a personal and professional level. “Together We Flourish: Embracing Your Changemaker Identity” was the topic of the day for the Kickoff session. Since 2016 Miami Dade College has been designated as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus. MDC continues to be a Champion to equip, empower, and engage students, faculty, and staff in changemaking. As we continue to serve various communities, and exposes students to life-changing experiences, we endeavor to provide transformative excellence at MDC to help shape and mold our students for the future. We will highlight students who demonstrate the attributes of a changemaker such as empathy, reflection, resilience, and action to positively impact the communities in the world. Changemaker Week focuses on this amazing theme of the 3Es: Equip. Empower. Engage. Kudos to the IMPACT Changemaker Committee at the Medical Campus for the remarkable work done in the planning phase for a great kickoff - Thank you Dr. Alwyn Leiba, Interim Campus President, Ana Soto, iCED Director of West and Medical Campuses Institute for Civic Engagement & Democracy (iCED) for your support to the committee; Professors Dr. Marjorie Hardy, IMPACT Committee Chair, and Dina Rubio, Co-Chair, Dr. Mark Ross, Donna Fiskin, Dr. Heather Brathwaite, Dr. Kelly Hernandez, Dr. Tommie Norris, Dean of Nursing, Dr. Ron Winston, Interim Dean of Health Sciences, Sandra Look Lafleur, Director, Changemaker Education and Social Innovation, Jaishri Venkatsubramaniam, and several other committee members. I met a group of first semester students from the ASN program. They were inspired! We spoke about the importance of belonging to a professional nursing organization, and how to join National Student Nurses Association (NSNA.org) and MDC Student Nurses Association (MDC-SNA. We look forward for more exciting events during Changemaker week! #changemakingmdc mdc.edu/changemaking #Transformativeeducation #Transformativeexcellence
