40% of US physicians aren’t required to participate in MOC programs because of grandfathering. But, besides the unfairness of this decision, it also revealed something far more troubling. Karen Schatten, Associate Director of the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons shared with us that she often talks to physicians, old and young, who agree on one thing: They are no better (or worse) off than their counterparts. Younger doctors who take these programs are no better off than the older doctors who aren’t required. This means the time investment pulling them away from their specialties and practices isn’t yielding the benefits they should. Fortunately, there is a potential solution in the works.
