About us

Established in Seattle, Washington in 1994, the National Center for APEC (NCAPEC) is the only U.S. business association focused exclusively on facilitating private sector engagement in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organization. Led by a board of more than 50 major U.S. companies with a strong interest in the growth and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific, NCAPEC works to advance U.S. private sector policy priorities in APEC’s discussions on trade and economic issues. NCAPEC also serves as the Secretariat to the U.S. members of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the official mechanism for private sector input in APEC. NCAPEC furthers its mission of facilitating dynamic public - private sector dialogue within the Asia-Pacific through its Pacific Summit Resources (PSR) subsidiary. PSR provides organizers of international, executive-level events and business summits in the Asia-Pacific with a wide range of advisory services including program development, sponsor recruitment, marketing and logistical support. Mission To stimulate and facilitate U.S. private sector engagement in APEC, and to communicate private sector APEC priorities at home and abroad.

This year, the National Center for APEC is celebrating its 30th Anniversary as the premier advocate for the U.S. private sector in the APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) framework. Our roots reach back to the first APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting convened by President Bill Clinton on Blake Island in 1993. At the conclusion of the historic gathering, visionary business and government leaders recognized the need for a permanent platform to shape private sector engagement in APEC - including Washington State Governor Mike Lowry, Seattle Mayor Norm Rice, and representatives from Boeing, Microsoft, Seattle-First National Bank, and Weyerhaeuser – joined forces to establish NCAPEC. Growing from a founding board of eight companies, we now support a membership comprising more than 45 leading American firms in innovative sectors such as #biopharmaceuticals, #finance, advanced #manufacturing, #technology, #mining, #energy and global #logistics. NCAPEC actively engages in APEC discussions through its participation in the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), while also serving as a strategic partner for the APEC CEO Summit, one of the region's most influential business events. Looking ahead to the 2024 APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Lima and Korea in 2025, we continue to build on our legacy of leadership and innovation. NCAPEC stands ready to leverage its three decades of expertise to drive solutions that help U.S. businesses contribute to economic growth and development in one of the world’s most vital economic regions. #NCAPEC30 #APEC #APEC2024 #BlakeIslandDeclaration

President, National Center for APEC |

Remembering Thomas J. Donohue Tom Donohue and I co-chaired many U.S.-APEC Business Coalition Meetings over the years, including this one in Bali in 2013. His support for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s engagement in APEC was vital to enabling the U.S. APEC Business Coalition to serve our mutual members’ interests at the APEC summits. On a personal note, I will always remember Tom’s kindness when – at APEC 2007 in Sydney – I learned that my 3-year old nephew had been diagnosed with leukemia. Tom served on the board of a childhood leukemia foundation and he offered to connect me with them and had such encouraging words about the amazing research and exciting scientific breakthroughs they were making on childhood leukemia. Even many years later at a Chamber event, Tom pulled me aside to ask about my nephew, who is now a thriving college sophomore. Rest in peace, Mr. Donohue. 30 years ago today, the private sector sponsors of the APEC 1993 Host Committee launched the National Center for APEC in order to foster greater business engagement in the APEC process. We are proud of the many accomplishments built on the legacy of the first APEC Leaders’ Meeting convened by President Bill Clinton on Blake Island. We set a very high bar for direct business engagement with Leaders, Ministers, and officials across the broad range of APEC work. Thank you for being a part of our community. Important work lies ahead, and we are more committed than ever to advancing policy priorities for NCAPEC members as we celebrate this milestone. #NCAPEC30 #APEC #APEC2024

The National Center for APEC is assisting the State Department in identifying three senior executives to represent the United States business community on the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) from the beginning of 2025 through the end of 2027. The U.S. representatives join their colleagues from APEC’s 20 other member economies to represent private sector views in APEC. They meet on a quarterly basis to develop recommendations to APEC officials on policies and practices to improve the environment for commerce in the Asia-Pacific region. ABAC conveys these recommendations through reports, statements, and direct engagement with APEC Leaders, Ministers, and other government officials. The goal of this search is to give every qualified executive willing to be an ABAC member an opportunity to declare their interest to represent the U.S. private sector and to give the White House a broad range of candidates from which to choose. In 2023, PECC contributed to the United States – Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) host year priority to increase multistakeholder engagement in the APEC process. These efforts were recognized by APEC Leaders in San Francisco in November, where they declared the importance of strengthening multistakeholder engagement. We look forward to supporting APEC Perú 2024’s efforts to continue multistakeholder outreach and engagement with initiatives like APEC Citizen Peru 2024 #APECciudadano and other public private partnerships. https://lnkd.in/gRDDV_Sy

On April 26, NCAPEC renewed its Asia-based programming in Singapore with the Executive Forum, bringing together government officials, business representatives, and thought leaders in the region to discuss ways APEC can address the critical issues of digital trade, climate and environment, and supply chain resilience. Speakers touched on the importance of bridging the gap between policy and practice and the critical role that trust plays in underpinning economic integration efforts in the region. In line with the Forum’s theme of “Connecting Continents,” the event closed with a panel session featuring Mexican Ambassador Agustin García-López Loaeza, Canadian High-Commissioner Jean-Dominique Ieraci, and Deji Okediji from the U.S. Embassy who discussed ways their respective governments are engaging with the Asia-Pacific on trade and economic policy. A special thank you to Executive Forum sponsor Citi, and speakers Blake Herzinger, Maciej Surowiec, Yee Leng Thaw, Peter Lovelock, Lee-Mey Goh, Casey Delhotal, Crispian Cuss, David Katz, Lay Lin Tan, Shiumei Lin, Deborah Elms, Brian Tan, Denis Hew, Sanjay Kurup, and Monica Hardy Whaley.

NCAPEC President Monica Hardy Whaley represented the United States at the second meeting of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) in Hong Kong this week. ABAC Members finalized letters to APEC Ministers who will participate in next month’s meetings on trade and women’s economic empowerment in Arequipa, Peru. In Hong Kong, we worked with colleagues from ABAC China on a joint proposal to promote supply chain resilience and connectivity for businesses, especially MSMEs, operating in the APEC region by calling on governments to: 1. Improve consultation with businesses on supply chain topics 2. Refrain from implementing measures that trigger supply chain disruption and distort trade and investment 3. Create more opportunities for business to business (B2B) collaboration 4. Support companies’ efforts to build resilience in their supply chains to be better prepared for future disruptions.   ABAC USA, in collaboration with UPS and the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service also supported a program in Hong Kong focused on supply chain resilience. Panel discussions covered the unique needs of supply chains in healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and consumer technology goods. The session also included a walk-through of the supply chain resilience toolkit which helps businesses identify vulnerabilities within their supply chains. The supply chain resilience toolkit is free and available at the link below. https://lnkd.in/geEuvtYz
