A new InfoBrief uses three NCSES data sources to understand the trends in funding for basic research over the past several decades, with an emphasis on federal funding. At the turn of the century, the federal government funded approximately 60% of basic research. In 2022, this share had dropped to an estimated 40%. At the same time, federal budget authority and federal obligations for basic research as a share of total federal R&D are among the highest levels they have been.
