Last month, The Miracle Theatre welcomed historic preservation advocates from around the country as part of 2024 National Historic Preservation Advocacy Week! Located on Capitol Hill in the historic Barracks Row neighborhood, and originally named the Meader Theater upon its opening in 1909, this building debuted as a vaudeville theatre with a mix of entertainment, including motion pictures and live performances. The building operated as a movie theatre until 1960, and 2011 marked the start of the buildings revival as a movie house and live entertainment venue. Thank you to all who joined us at this beautiful theatre to celebrate the important work being done in Historic Preservation! ACHP Program Analyst Chris Wilson visited Rhode Island State Historic Preservation Officer Jeffrey Emidy and Project Reviewer Elizabeth Totten recently, who provided him with an overview of their operations as well as a comprehensive tour of their building, the historic Old State House in Providence. Opened in 1762, it is one of just six surviving colonial-era state houses in America. It was in this building that Rhode Island renounced allegiance to the British Crown on May 4, 1776. After a new State House was built in 1901, the building housed the Sixth District Court, and for the last five decades has been home to the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission. The State of Rhode Island has been awarded two grants from the National Park Service to expand public access to the building, restore interiors and the historic landscape, and share research about the property’s history. The building is listed individually in the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing resource in the College Hill National Historic Landmark District and the nationally significant College Hill National Register Historic District.
