We applaud the recent passage of the Program Comment on Stewardship and Management of National Park Service Mission 66-Era Facilities (1945-1972) initiated by the National Park Service in the fall of 2023. 18 Advisory Council members including NCSHPO voted in favor of this Program Comment. The Program Comment establishes parameters to manage National Park Service Mission 66-Era Facilities dating from 1945 to 1972, and reduces external reviews for simple or routine undertakings, unlikely to cause significant adverse effects to historic properties. This serves as a timely example of efficiencies that can be achieved through consultative processes. NCSHPO remains committed to promoting efficiencies where possible, while at the same time safeguarding our most valued historic resources from ill-advised efforts to circumvent consultation and project review in the name of ever-changing policy goals.
