Earlier this year, the United States Department of Education announced that it would be dismantling the Digital Accessibility Unit. On Wednesday, October 30, we sent a letter to the Department of Education to communicate our displeasure and frustration with this decision. Read the full letter: https://lnkd.in/e56gDU_5

Live the life you want.
About us
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back. The National Federation of the Blind believes in the full capacity of blind people and has the power, influence, diversity, and determination to help transform our dreams into reality. We believe in blind people because we are blind people. Our democratically elected leaders and our diverse nationwide membership are made up of blind people, our families, and our friends. We are bound together by the shared belief that we are capable of achieving our dreams and living the lives we want. We support one another, act with courage and determination when we encounter barriers or experience setbacks, and engage in collective action to improve our lives.

Did you know that it took three and a half years to build the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland? Did you know that it was the world’s longest continuous over-water steel structure in 1952? Join team National Federation of the Blind Dreamers for a 10K walk or run across the Bay Bridge on November 10. Can’t make it to Baltimore? That’s okay because you can participate virtually. Whether you’re running, walking, in person, or virtual, this is your chance to help bridge the gap between blind people and our dreams and be a part of our gift matching challenge. Thanks to the generous gift from HumanWare and an anonymous donor, every dollar that you contribute to the National Federation of the Blind will be doubled. Register today at nfb.org/BayBridge

We are pleased to share positive updates on our collaboration to improve accessibility on Facebook, following a productive meeting with key personnel at Meta who can implement these improvements. Members have reported significant Facebook accessibility issues across multiple platforms, and we have relayed these concerns directly to Meta during our meeting. Meta has acknowledged the serious accessibility regressions and states that it is ramping up its quality assurance efforts. The company is committed to resolving defects across platforms, working steadily to address accessibility bugs each day. Our partnership with Meta includes ongoing dialogue to ensure blind people can engage on social media on equal terms. In addition, Meta is collaborating with the screen reader industry to uphold and advance accessibility standards for the long term. We look forward to seeing tangible progress in the near future. We encourage blind people to continue to share your experiences with us so we can aggregate these experiences into our discussions with the company. Feel free to complete our Inaccessibility Tracker Form: https://lnkd.in/ewJk-WqM

We advocate for our right to vote. Ballot Marking Devices (BMDs) are a great way to help blind people vote privately and independently. However, our surveys show that one-third of all poll workers do not know how to operate BMDs and that some blind and low-vision voters are not familiar with BMD accessibility features. So, to solve this problem, we have produced videos that demonstrate the accessibility features and how to mark a ballot with four of the most commonly used BMDs. These videos are also available for poll worker training and voter education. You can watch our Ballot Marking Device videos at nfb.org/vote
