The Sussex Central FFA Chapter in Georgetown, Del., has adapted and expanded to serve a growing student population. Advisor Brandon McCabe notes that while many students come from non-farming backgrounds, the chapter offers pathways in plant science, animal science, engineering and more to engage all interests. Programs like the satellite partnership with Howard T. Ennis Special Education School further ensure inclusive opportunities for all students. When Stillwater FFA chapter officers saw the need to empower their members to make a difference, they launched “Changing the World with a $5 Bill”—a project rooted in their Program of Activities (POA)! POAs are the chapter's roadmap for impactful events, built around three pillars: Growing Leaders, Building Communities, and Strengthening Agriculture. Meet Chase Owens from North Murray FFA in Georgia, who turned a tiny pumpkin seed into a massive 533-pound pumpkin! Starting his project in March 2023, Chase carefully grew the pumpkin, overcoming weather challenges and using a greenhouse and sunshade to protect it. He fertilized weekly, watered consistently, and even misted the pumpkin to regulate its temperature. After months of care, Chase transported his enormous pumpkin to the North Georgia Agricultural Fair, where he won first place. A recent study conducted during the 2024 Iowa FFA Leadership Conference revealed that 70% of participating FFA members in Iowa aspire to farm in the future, yet nearly 48% identify start-up costs as a primary barrier for new and beginning farmers. The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers is actively working to facilitate connections between retiring farmers and the younger generation, fostering beneficial arrangements that encourage young farmers to enter the industry.
