The grasslands of the Northern Great Plains support wildlife species found nowhere else. Thanks to generations of land stewardship by ranchers, Indigenous-led organizations, public agencies and nonprofit organizations, much of the Northern Great Plains remains as native grassland that is productive for people and wildlife. However, this unparalleled resource is threatened by land-use changes and a lack of capacity to manage the grasslands of this vast region. That’s why we’re excited to undertake this crucial work of restoring the Northern Great Plains with the Bezos Earth Fund. The Earth Fund’s major contribution to the Northern Great Plains Program helped to make this a record-breaking year for the program. Together, we’re looking forward to conserving vulnerable lands and preserving species across the landscape. 📷: Left: Bezos Earth Fund Program Officer Emily Averna and Monte Reed discuss conservation and restoration efforts on his family’s ranch in Wyoming. Bats: small mammals with a big impact. 💪 🦇 💪 We’ll bat you didn’t know that the pesticide services of bats are worth more than $1 billion annually to the U.S. corn industry alone, and more than $3.7 billion annually to all agricultural production. The Bats for the Future Fund, a partnership between NFWF and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), is offering up to $650,000 in grant funding to conserve bats and slow or halt the impacts of white-nose syndrome, a significant threat to bat populations across North America. Thanks to NextEra Energy Resources and Southern Company for their support. Learn more >> https://lnkd.in/eDNu6RyC #bats #conservation #wildlife #whitenosesyndrome #grantopportunity

Did you hear that? 🔊 Neither can our killer whales! Killer whales rely on their, um, *killer* sense of hearing to communicate with their pod and navigate the sea. But increased human-made vessel noise and coastal development is turning the ocean into a noisy neighborhood, making it tough for these marine mammals to communicate, find food and avoid predators. Constant racket doesn’t just stress killer whales, it also directly impacts their chances of survival. Working with US Navy, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), BNSF Railway and NOAA Fisheries, we are soliciting proposals for projects that seek to turn down the volume to aid in the recovery of the Southern Resident killer whales, among other program priorities. Thanks to restoration efforts from NFWF grantee Island Conservation, rare Peruvian diving-petrels have returned to nest on Pajaros Uno Island in Chile. These diving-petrels haven’t been seen on the island in decades, but following Island Conservation’s work to remove invasive predators and employ social attraction techniques, these vital seabirds are back! This milestone not only ensures the survival of these birds, but also revitalizes the island’s entire ecosystem. Our Seabirds Program is soliciting proposals to improve populations of focal seabird species and other species like the Peruvian diving petrel through actions that increase survival and reproduction. Learn more >> https://loom.ly/EqPiZ0Y Funding support for this initiative comes from the United States Marine Corps, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and private funding sources. #conservation #wildlife #seabird #grantopportunity

Public landowners 🤝 Private landowners Creating healthier forests for all This #NationalForestWeek, we’re highlighting our collaborative efforts with International Paper, USDA Forest Service and other partners under the Forestland Stewards Partnership to help safeguard the historical longleaf pine forests, which provides vital habitat for species like the red-cockaded woodpecker. Nature knows no boundaries, so with these partnerships, we’re enhancing the corridors that connect our public and private lands, reducing wildfire risks and promoting biodiversity.
