Today, we have some big news to share. We’re launching a three-year artist residency at the National Gallery and the Corcoran School. The residency will serve as a creative lab—an opportunity for artists, students, and the public to come together, experiment, and explore new ways of thinking and creating. It’s a collaborative effort between the National Gallery, Corcoran School and For Freedoms, an artist-led collective known for their impactful public installations and billboards that inspire creative expression. Some flowers for you, just because. 🌹 Pierre-Auguste Renoir was celebrated worldwide for his role in the impressionist movement, but what’s fascinating is his early work, which often gets overlooked. Like many of us, in his younger years, Renoir was still trying to find his voice. Before the vibrant colors and loose brushstrokes that characterized his later works, Renoir had a much different style—a style that reveals a side of him that's often overshadowed by his later success. The artist made this painting, “Flowers in a Vase,” when he was 25 years old. The muted colors and exquisite detail draw you in. You can feel the love and labor in each stroke—something that makes sense when you consider his training as a porcelain painter, where precision and elegance were key. It’s a stark contrast to the spontaneous flair of his later work, but it reminds us that beneath every masterpiece lies the essence of exploration, the willingness to grow and evolve.
