Many women experiencing perimenopause and menopause struggle to find effective treatments to manage symptoms—but that may be changing. Mounting evidence suggests a form of talk therapy known as cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT effectively alleviates multiple menopause symptoms including night sweats, hot flashes, diminished libido, and more. Even better, this treatment can do so with almost no adverse outcomes—unlike many drugs and hormone therapies. Mexico’s scarlet macaw subspecies, Ara macao cyanoptera, form monogamous pairs that return to the same nests year after year, making them a prime target for the illegal wildlife trade. With their numbers already in decline through habitat loss, conservationists are taking unusual but effective measures to ensure that this endangered species has a chance at survival. Martial eagles hunt lion cubs for lunch in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. In this photo, a juvenile martial eagle snatches a three-week-old lion cub. No one saw the bird kill the cub. Based on the fledgling eagle’s behavior, researchers suspect that an adult female gave the cub to the fledgling. While witnessing such predator-prey interactions can be distressing, it’s important to remember that these things often go both ways in the natural world—lions could and probably have hunted adult eagles or nests. As the sixth stop on The Global Expedition, the National Geographic Pristine Seas team spent time in Palau – conducting the first-ever research on the three remote seamounts that sit beneath the surface. Their time spent underwater totaled 400 hours (over two weeks!) While there, they worked in close partnership with local scientists, experts from the Ebiil Society, Palau International Coral Reef Center, One Reef and the government of Palau. This data gathered will help Palau access management measures for its marine reserve to protect vital areas and species. National Geographic Pristine Seas is funded by the National Geographic Society, a global non-profit organization committed to exploring, illuminating and protecting the wonder of our world.
