Yesterday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and whether DACA exceeds presidential authority. DACA recipients have been living in a state of uncertainty since 2017, when the Trump administration decided to end the program. Since it was established in 2012, DACA has shielded more than 600,000 recipients from deportation and has provided them with a work permit, driver’s license, and the opportunity to get a post-secondary education. DACA recipients also make meaningful contributions to the U.S. economy by paying $6.2 billion in federal taxes and $3.3 billion in state and local taxes each year and have also made. Additionally, there are an estimated 27,000 health care workers and support staff that depend on DACA, and this also includes nearly 200 medical students, medical residents and physicians who depend on DACA for their eligibility to practice medicine.
