About us
The National Indian Education Association (NIEA), founded in 1969, is the most inclusive Native organization in the country representing Native students, educators, families, communities, and tribes. NIEA's goal is to expand access to equal educational opportunities for every Native student regardless of their location or background. This goal is accomplished through focusing on helping tribes and communities develop capacity to administer excellent education programs for Native students by promoting culturally based education models that allow future generations to strengthen languages and preserve the traditions of their tribes and communities. NIEA's mission is to advance comprehensive educational opportunities for American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians throughout the United States.

🚨 Historic Moment for Healing 🚨 This Friday, October 27th, President Biden will deliver a formal apology to Native communities for the federal government’s role in the harmful boarding school policies. This landmark event will take place at Gila Crossing Community School in the Gila River Indian Community. For the first time, a sitting U.S. president will publicly acknowledge the atrocities committed against Native children through these boarding schools, a policy that sought to erase Native culture. This moment is part of President Biden’s promise to address historical injustices. Joining him is Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who has led the “Road to Healing” tour, allowing survivors to share their experiences for the first time with the federal government. ✊🏽 This is a significant step toward truth, reconciliation, and healing for our communities. Tribal leaders, such as Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis of Gila River, are calling this visit a long-awaited moment of redemption and acknowledgment for survivors and their families. 📢 Call to Action: 1.)Tune in live on October 27, 2024 at 1:30 pm EST/10:30 AM PST to witness this historic apology. 2.)Share your support for boarding school survivors and their families by posting your thoughts on social media using #TruthAndHealing and #NativeBoardingSchools. 3.)Amplify the message by engaging your community, schools, and local leaders in conversations about the impact of boarding schools on Native peoples. 4.)Join us in advocating for policy changes that protect Native languages, cultures, and sovereignty today. 5.)Contact your legislators and urge them to support the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act. Let’s ensure the world hears the stories of our elders and honors the resilience of Native communities. Together, we can continue to push for justice, healing, and a better future for Native students. #NIEA #NativeEducation #NativeVoices #BoardingSchoolApology #HealingJourney
