The Implementation of New Initiatives and Policies page has the latest information on recent and upcoming changes that impact NIH applications and grants administration.
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) supports basic research that increases our understanding of biological processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. NIGMS also supports research in specific clinical areas that affect multiple organ systems: anesthesiology and peri-operative pain; clinical pharmacology common to multiple drugs and treatments; and injury, critical illness, sepsis, and wound healing. NIGMS-funded scientists investigate how living systems work at a range of levels—from molecules and cells to tissues and organs—in research organisms, humans, and populations. Additionally, to ensure the vitality and continued productivity of the research enterprise, NIGMS provides leadership in supporting the training of the next generation of scientists and developing research capacity throughout the country. NIGMS is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the principal medical research agency of the federal government and a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Twenty amino acids are commonly encoded in genes, but did you know there are actually 22 genetically encoded amino acids? And there are over 400 variations of amino acids once you factor in post-translational modifications! #Proteins #BasicScience
We couldn’t survive without proteins—the essential molecules that provide cells with structure, aid in chemical reactions, support communication, and much more. In our latest post, we portion out protein numbers, including how fast they can move, how big they are, and how much of our bodies they compose. #Proteins #BasicScience
Wondering if the NIGMS-supported Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) is right for you? PREP offers aspiring scientists the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and prepare for graduate-level studies in biomedical sciences. Participants gain hands-on research experience, personalized mentorship, professional development opportunities, and more! Learn more from Wendy Deras and Saloni Dixon, PREP scholars at the Indiana University Indianapolis Indiana University School of Medicine, about how PREP has helped them build confidence, develop critical skills, and open doors to exciting opportunities in science. #ResearchTraining #NIGMS #NIH #FutureScientists #CareerDevelopment #STEM
