There are several reasons why someone might be disqualified as a living kidney donor. One is weight, specifically body mass index (BMI). If you have been disqualified as a living donor due to weight, there are steps you can take to become eligible to donate. https://lnkd.in/e8KkSzbW #ConsiderLivingDonation #LivingKidneyDonors #CanIDonate

The NKR has a new Member Center. Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago is now an NKR Member Center, joining 103 other transplant centers spanning 35 states and the District of Columbia. Northwestern has the largest transplant and living donor program in Illinois and one of the largest in the U.S. It is the seventh in the U.S. in terms of kidney transplant volume, having performed 347 kidney transplants in 2023 and 6,500 since opening in 1964. https://lnkd.in/eCB9M8wP #NKR #LivingDonorTransplants #ConsiderLivingKidneyDonation #LivingKidneyDonors

Like many people, Karen Jones didn't know a living person could donate a kidney. Then she heard a story about living kidney donation on the radio, which started her kidney donation journey. On August 16, 2023, she donated a kidney through the NKR's Voucher Program on behalf of a man whose need for a kidney she learned about through her best friend. https://lnkd.in/eD7XxfY8

In 2023, Marco David Palacios was suffering from kidney failure and undergoing daily dialysis. When Marco learned about living kidney donation, he told his sister Jessica Lopez and she signed up to be his donor. Marco and Jessica's donation and transplant surgeries took place at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Thanks to the Jackson transplant team and his sister, Marco is "able to experience life again." #MotivationalMonday #LivingKidneyDonors #ConsiderLivingDonation https://lnkd.in/e_d3NHCy

On June 20, 88-year-old Ken Ramsey set a new Guinness World Record, becoming the oldest person to receive a kidney transplant. Tom Pope, a family friend, donated one of his kidneys to Ken, and both had successful surgeries at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital at the Weill Cornell Transplant Center. Ken is eternally thankful to Tom for his "five star kidney." #MotivationalMonday #LivingKidneyDonors #NKRMemberCenters https://lnkd.in/e29fGzUV

On March 13, Tanya Anderson, a living donor coordinator at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, donated one of her kidneys through the NKR's Voucher Program to enable her mother to receive a living kidney donor transplant. Her mom is waiting to be matched with a living donor, but in the meantime, Tanya received a letter from her recipient, who was grateful to have her life back thanks to Tanya's donation.
