National Museum of African American Music

With it's initial invention in the 1930s, the Electric Guitar drastically began changing the landscape of Blues recordings, and the developments of future genres to come.    First patented in 1937, the electric technologies of the new guitar allowed musicians to play amplified melodies rather than just their previous rhythmic/harmonic roles. Artists like "T-Bone" Walker's early recordings would become a foundation for coming generations, including Muddy Waters, B.B. Hip-Hop Meets Bomba Music from Puerto Rico: After hours of cultural and musical exchange, hip-hop artists from Memphis and Afro-Puerto Rican bomba performers will each showcase their music and improvise to blend musical genres. The exchange aims to create new connections between communities in the African Diaspora and break down linguistic and national barriers. Ironing Board Sam's keyboard is one of our featured exhibit items in the Crossroads gallery. Starting as an inventive way to bring a portable keyboard to performances, "Ironing Board" Sam's nickname became a part of his ongoing performance legacy throughout a multi-decade career.
