As #ElectricVehicles continue to grow their share of the market, several federal agencies are transitioning their own large fleets to EVs, too. NREL is partnering with federal agencies like the US Army and others within the United States Department of Defense to electrify their non-tactical vehicles by identifying the right combinations, locations, and type of electric vehicles and chargers for the unique needs of their bases. Learn about the tools and strategies NREL fleet electrification experts are using: https://bit.ly/3XUEqB8

It’s #MFGDay! Have you considered a career in manufacturing? 🧐 Matt Ringer, the host of a new video series called #AMinuteWithMatt hopes you do. “Manufacturing jobs don’t always have to be dirty,” Ringer says in one video. Today, they’re often higher-paying, cleaner, and more automated (with robots!) than most people think. “We’re not losing jobs. We’re just changing the jobs,” Ringer says. Check out the new series to learn more about the #manufacturing workforce, how #CleanEnergy could help the industry save money and emissions, and what exactly “advanced manufacturing” means ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gXQD9gAC

People who live in apartment buildings, condos, and other types of multifamily housing don’t always have off-street parking or garages, and they need different solutions to charge their #EV at home. The number of chargers available to people in multifamily housing is growing to meet the need. Between Q4 2023 and Q1 2024, Level 2 multifamily #EV charging ports increased by 20.1%. Using NREL’s powerful Fleet Research, Energy Data, and Insights (FleetREDI) commercial vehicle data collection and analysis platform, NREL researchers, in partnership with EPRI, estimated the energy demand per container imported (kWh/TEU) at a fully electrified maritime port. Port operators, decision makers, and other stakeholders can use NREL’s finely tuned FleetREDI insights and visualizations to calculate the projected energy use of electric port equipment based on the number of containers moved at their port. NREL’s easily scalable port terminal load estimates, powered by FleetREDI, can inform investments in electric port equipment and charging #infrastructure in preparation for increased demand on the #PowerGrid. Accelerating transmission expansion could result in up to $490 billion in system cost savings through 2050 in highly decarbonized electricity systems. These savings are realized by providing access to a diverse set of resources often via interregional transmission. The National Transmission Planning Study—a comprehensive, multiyear partnership project between NREL, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Grid Deployment Office, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory—shows decreased system costs in all low-carbon scenarios with accelerated transmission expansion. Short term, the savings come primarily from avoided fuel costs and then transition to savings from a reduced need for capital investment. How can one home builder help meet national climate goals and support the industry’s transition to #NetZero carbon building? As part of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building America case study, IBACOS sought to find out. The answer had two parts: ✅ For the biggest immediate impact, use materials and practices that cut carbon emissions upfront. ✅ To add ongoing benefits, build energy-efficient homes that reduce emissions from operating the home for decades to come. NREL is thrilled to launch the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity’s Community Microgrid Assistance Partnership (C-MAP) focused on electrically isolated and underserved communities in Alaska, Hawaii, and Tribal lands in the Great Plains and Southwest. With C-MAP, you can plan a resilient microgrid system, make improvements on an existing system, build workforce capacity, or add renewable energy. This program will build a knowledge network around microgrid development and innovation in rural communities and deploy technology solutions that can be replicated nationwide. Interested community leaders and developers can technical assistance for developing a project proposal. Learn more at bit.ly/47Au4tk.

This National Drive Electric Week, we’re sharing electric success stories from #CleanCities and Communities coalitions. Read below to learn about how solar-powered electric refrigeration units are improving local air quality in New York. Empire Clean Cities helped replace diesel refrigeration units with solar-powered electric truck trailers at the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center in the South Bronx, the largest food distribution site in the world. Transitioning to electric refrigerated trucking units reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves air quality for nearby marginalized communities, as well as serves as an example for other national distribution centers.
