National Right to Housing Network
Civic and Social Organizations
We are a national network dedicated to the meaningful implementation of the right to housing in Canada.
About us
In 2019, the National Housing Strategy Act was passed in Canada. This committed the federal government to upholding the right to housing as it is defined in international human rights law. The National Right to Housing Network (NRHN) is a group of over 350 key leaders, organizations, subject matter experts, and people with lived experience of housing precarity and homelessness, with a shared mission to fully realize the right to housing for all and ultimately eliminate homelessness in Canada. Our Network is dedicated to ensuring that the right to housing in Canada is meaningfully implemented. We do this by: - Bringing together a network of civil society voices in a collective voice that speaks to the implementation of the right to housing; - Working with Governments to develop Canada’s right to housing architecture; - Identifying and testing solutions to systemic barriers in order to set precedents, address key gaps in the National Housing Strategy, and drive changes in housing policy and funding; - Exploring research on the right to housing; - Supporting community initiatives in order to build a housing rights culture in Canada; - Expanding the right to housing to provincial, territorial, and municipal jurisdictions.

The Federal Housing Advocate and Ian Hamilton speak on the Advocate's human rights review on encampments at the first session of our Right to Housing stream today at #CAEH24! The federal government announced new funding for human rights-based community action plans following the Federal Housing Advocate's call for a National Encampments Response Plan. But more needs to be done. "Forced evictions of encampments are a violation to the human rights of residents... forced evictions must be prohibited and the human rights of residents must be upheld by all levels of government." - Office of the Federal Housing Advocate #encampments #right2housing #housingisahumanright #endhomelessness

The NRHN team is at #CAEH24! Looking forward to seeing many of you at our Right to Housing (RTH) stream today 😊 Come meet the team & let's talk housing justice!

📢 We just made a submission to the Federal Housing Advocate about the long-lasting impacts of evictions on young people in Canada. Youth who face eviction are more likely to experience poorer health outcomes, educational challenges, and increased risk of poverty and homelessness. Our submission calls for a formal Advocate-led review on the issue: https://loom.ly/NmzVVPI #YouthHomelessness #MtS Canadian Centre for Housing Rights

Big news for the housing justice sector! The Office of the Federal Housing Advocate released the second ever Advocate-led review today. This time the review is on dismantling barriers to Métis housing in Saskatchewan. A recommendation that really stood out to me: "To ensure accountability for recognizing housing as a human right, it is recommended that Saskatchewan appoints an independent Provincial Housing Advocate. Part of the Advocate’s duties would include amplifying the voices of Métis and advocating for the timely creation of a rights-respecting, culturally-appropriate housing system. This role would ensure oversight and accountability of efforts to uphold the human right to housing for Métis. This office needs to be separate from the Office of Residential Tenancies and could be placed within the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission." Especially as the sector dives more into issues like security of tenure and evictions - it is so clear that we need other levels of government to step up with human rights mechanisms to make sure housing policies and programs are actually serving the most marginalized. The National Right to Housing Network has a webpage on the role of the Federal Housing Advocate if you want to know more! https://lnkd.in/eeHqQrxn There's also a newsletter to stay in the loop on everything #right2housing! https://lnkd.in/ejA4TvGb #housingjustice #righttohousing #housingrights
